Kufri is a destination in its own right, this is 16 km from Shimla and has long been famous for its ski slopes and fine views. Known for its ski runs Kufri, attracts the largest number of tourists who come to Shimla.

It has a backdrop of peaks covered with snow and a small zoo. Yak-ride is added attraction. Along the ridge shaded by tall trees runs a road to Chail, yet another tourist spot in solan District.

The Himalayan Nature Park is also at Kufri and the area has a fair amount of options fro family entertainment.

Shimla is located on seven major hills namely – Observatory Hill, Prospect Hill, Inveram Hill, Summer Hill, Elysium Hill, Jakhoo Hill and Bantony Hill.

The name “Shimla” is derived from the name of a Goddess – Shyamala Devi who is considered as an incarnation of another Hindu Goddess “Kali”

Kufri is a beautiful hill station situated at an altitude of 2633 m above the sea level and 16 km from Shimla on the National Highway 22.

In summers one can do horse and yak riding on the green meadows. One can trek to the Mahasu peak for some adventure. Some resorts have come up around Kufri on the Kufri-Chail road for those seeking abode away from the maddening crowds of Shimla.

It is named so because of a story according to which a British lady was eloped with an Indian Maharaja due to which the later was banished from entering Shimla.

The Himalayan Nature Park and the Indira Tourist Park are the near by tourist attractions, with with HPTDC's Cafe Lalit. Indira Park provides some great views of the nearby places. Here one can enjoy a Pony or a Yak Ride.

Shimla falls in seismic zone IV and it is said that even 2% buildings of Shimla cannot withstand a high intensity earthquake.

Tunnel number 33 is the longest tunnel on Kalka-Shimla Railway track and it has a secret story to tell. In 1898, British Govt. gave the charge to build this tunnel to an engineer named Colonel Barog but he could not finish the project by the given deadline and was charged with a rupee fine.
